The Bromsgrove Society was formed in 1980 to cover the same area as the District Council. Since that date the Society has endeavoured to address all aspects of planning both built and environment in the District. Representation has been made at Planning Enquiries and all applications are carefully monitored.
The Society operates under a constitution drawn up when the grassroots were springing up and is operated by an Executive Committee of twenty people which is responsible for management and administration.
Subsidiary and supporting the executive are the Local History Group and the Environment Committee.
The Local History Group has a variety of activities:
- A programme of regular meetings on local topics.
- Publication of books and other publications including the Bromsgrove Rousler, a local history magazine every December.
The Environment Committee examines planning and development and a large range of items which affect the way the town and district look.
Separately, The Bromsgrove Lecture has attracted a large audience over the thirty years of its existence and is given by an expert in the field. Also an Architectural Award Competition is held on a regular basis.
In addition, the Society has:
- Promoted landscape work, restoration of the church steps and lych gates to St.John's Church and cemetery;
- Supported the restoration of Lickey drinking fountain;
- Provided six town signs on entrances to the town;
- Installed plaques in the town to mark the Medieval Crosses.
Other recipients have included Avoncroft Museum, St.Peter's Church, All Saints Church and the Railwaymen's Graves in Bromsgrove Churchyard.
